Tyson Mao might have some sick Rubik's Cube skills, especially when he solves it behind his back with his eyes blindfolded, but I'd like to see him try Shapeway's ginormous 17 x 17 x 17 Rubik's Cube.

In only what I believe can be the ultimate geekery, designer Oskar van Deventer's massive 17 x 17 x 17 Rubik's Cube is finally a reality. After failing to conceive a prototype twice, on his third try, Deventer managed to successfully use a 3D printer to bring his puzzle to life. With over 1539 individual pieces, Deventer's 17 x 17 x 17 Rubik's cube took over 15 hours in total to create.

Deventer will be presenting his world record shattering Rubik's Cube next month in New York City. I'm sure everyone will be thoroughly impressed. And here I thought those 7 x 7 x 7, 9 x 9 x 9 and 11 x 11 x 11 Rubik's Cubes were already outrageous in size.

I suspect a lot of Rubik's Cube fanatics just peed themselves a little. If I could even solve a 3 x 3 x 3 cube I'd be drooling all over this by now.

People are obviously going to do speed runs on the thing, furiously trying to spin it as efficiently as possible.

Out of all the hobbies someone could have, I don't see speed runs on a rubiks cube particularly useful. Fascinating no doubt, but useless.

It probably improves the mind on object manipulation and memorization.

It may or may not. I'm sure there are many other hobbies that can give you the same improvement.

Nothing comes to mind in that similar scope.
