Scentscape immerses you in movies with smells
Companies may be trying to sell you 3D everything at the moment, but the doesn't mean you should fall for it. Want more realism in your movies and games? It doesn't get more real than being able to smell what you're watching and playing.
ScentSciences is going against the elements and more or less reviving Smell-O-Vision. Its ScentScape machine along with its ScentEditor will let you synch smells to your favorite home videos easily through its Plug-N-Play interface.
Smells are stored on cartridges that can hold up to 20 different scents and should last up to 200 hours. Want a custom smell? ScentSciences takes orders for personalized smells too. An included "volume rocker" even lets you adjust the strength of each smell.
Just from looking at the picture, you might think the ScentScape is about the size of a toaster, but actually, it's about 3.5 x 4.25 x 5.5-inches. If literally getting a whiff of your media has you excited, you'll be happy to know that the ScentScape is only $70 and $20 for the editing software. Unless you're virtualizing or running Windows on a separate partition, Mac OS X users need not apply, as the entire package only works with Windows 98, XP or 7.
Personally, smelling my movies is something I don't care for. I mean, there's a reason why Smell-O-Vision didn't take off. I'll tell you though, it sure is funny to wonder who's going to be the first one to order a turd or an arm-pit scent from ScentSciences.

This is a little over the top. Some movies not to watch with this, Schindlers List, Se7en, Saw, really any horror.

Interesting ideas, though. Haha.
Could maybe add to the experience, but I don't see this going to the theatres. Too much space, would be inefficient.

Maybe like little ones on the bottom of your 3D glasses?
Then you can actually smell the burning jews.

LOL well then, probably in that case, although I don't think they would be disposable. They're not going to be simple scent-pads, or well...
Re: Scentscape immerses you in movies with smells
Disposable would generate more money. Constantly having to buy expensive cartridges that only the company will produce. Especially since this will probably be a more exclusive item used only by geeks and the maniacally rich.

Actually, that's quite true, although I'm sure the ticket prices would be driven up to even more ludicrous price points by that, and by then maybe people will smarten.
Re: Scentscape immerses you in movies with smells
I doubt they will find much market in theatres.

Household... it's still kind of impractical. What else are you going to use it for, and how are you going to "program" it specifically for something? It's probably only going to be for that small niche that really desires and can afford for such technology, like 3D televisions.

Exactly. Geeks and the maniacally rich.
