Flying yacht ignores basic rules of crazy concept design
We love concepts around here, the crazier the better. But, there are some rules that you have to follow when creating a concept, and if your design is going to appear to violate established physical laws, it had better not rely on conventional technology to do it.
Don't get me wrong, this concept design by Phil Pauley is totally cool looking and if someone made one and said, "here, you can have this for free," I'd probably take it. Problem is, nobody will ever say that, because without warp engines or something, there's just no way that this thing would ever make it airborne.
The way that the Fly Cruiser is supposed to work is that wings with integrated jet engines extend outward from the body, and the boat accelerates until it's hydroplaning on a 'stability board,' which it then retracts once it's moving fast enough: "at the touch of a button your marine experience goes into fly mode and lifts you from the plain and into free air to well over 100 knots." 100 knots? That seems slow, why not make it 1000 knots while you're at it? Oh, because that would be just silly? Well, okay then.
Now, if they wanted to say that this boat was powered by ant-grav thrusters, then I'd totally buy the concept, because at least that would make sense. But until they work in some basic design changes that incorporate nonexistent technology, you'll just have to content yourself with the other (far more realistic) boats in this family of concepts, one of which can turn into a submarine.

That submarine one is badass. However the idea of a flying yacht doesn't interest me. If you can afford a yacht that flys why not just buy a really nice plane?

No idea. Perhaps its the appeal that a hovercraft has on people.
Re: Flying yacht ignores basic rules of crazy concept design
A hovercraft is a motherfucking hovercraft. A yacht is a yacht. A yacht is badass enough to not have to fly. And the idea of even traveling in a yacht is because you are beyond flying, you now elegantly sail the seas instead of flying over them like every other bourgeois schmo.

Ridiculous idea. I don't think they will ever become reality.

But imagine the BP ex-president floating on a yacht with his son!
