Image of the Day: Japan's Large Helical Device

The good folks in Toki, Japan are busy plugging away at solutions to the energy crisis… with the largest superconducting stellarator ever made. According to Alexander Rose, this means that the Large Helical Device (LHD), "is the beginning of what you need to have your own little star right here on planet earth… without actually making our little blue marble into a star."

Sounds pretty tricky, so I'm gonna leave the whole harnessing solar fusion to the experts and enjoy the sheer beauty of this image.

That's actually really cool--large-scale science devices apparently are aesthetically pleasing!

Reminds me of the alien ship from "Alien". Or something straight out of doom or dead space.

Eh, let us hope this works out; I'm not too clear on what the functionality of the device is (why do I always assume it has something to do with nuclear destruction).
